At Stretton we strive to raise the profile of Science in our greater community. The purpose of our Stretton Science Ambassador Program is to provide our students with a plethora of opportunities to engage with Science on a variety of levels. Under the umbrella of the University of Queensland, this leadership program is built upon the principles of collaboration and innovation. Students are encouraged to represent our school and build their leadership capacity.

Students work in teams to collaborate and plan intensively to design and then deliver events for their peers and the wider Stretton Community. Each year we have an extensive calendar of events, including but not limited to:

  • The Illaweena Science Fair - a lunchtime celebration of hands-on Science activities and practical demonstrations

  • The Gowan Science Festival - a whole day workshop rotation aimed at the entire Year 6 cohort

  • National Science Week - a whole week of lunchtime Science workshops, demonstrations, challenges and competitions

  • The Wonder of Science mentorship program - a cross-over endeavour whereby WOS alumni in Year 11 mentor the current Year 7, 8 and 9 students in preparing for the Wonder of Science challenge

  • The UQ Leadership Day - a whole day of leadership workshops, keynote speakers and activities at UQ

  • Running workshops for our Gowan Primary school students on Wednesday afternoons through the 'Science Alliance' Project

  • Priority entry to the SPARQ-Ed Research Immersion Program at the Diamantina Institute

  • EOIs and entry to the National Biotechnology Challenge

  • Co-leadership opportunities with the Griffith Science Ambassador Program and Griffith Cutting Edge for Kids'

  • Reserved places at the UQ Biology and Physics Winter School Program (an External Exam preparation program occurring during the holidays)
